Within the Health Informatics Monitoring RD sustaining engineering group, the sustaining engineer’s primary responsibility will be to support hardware aspects of Remote Patient Monitoring products currently on the market. The sustaining engineer will research and validate electrical/electronic and IT-related components, materials and applications while sustaining current product designs. The engineer is responsible for the design history files, determining test requirements and coordinating VV testing. In addition to implementing moderate design changes that either enhance performance or address quality issues, the sustaining engineer performs formal root cause investigations, determines root cause failure modes and provides solutions for these issue in that above product lines.


1.Provides technical support for existing products by developing solutions for problems moderate to complex in nature and/or of moderate organizational impact with a high level of accountability, moderate level of authority and some supervisory oversight.

2.Works to maintain product performance and quality for existing products by leading and assisting with issues relating to CAPAs, customer complaints and manufacturing processes, such as:

• Failure investigation and root cause analysis

• CAPA resolution

• Regulatory compliance

• Product Design Verification and Design Validation

• Design changes

• Test methods and tooling design

• Process enhancement and improvement

3.Provides research on components, modules and assemblies for RoHS compliance.

4.Follows strict adherence to policies and procedures associated with an FDA controlled environment.

5.Generates Engineering Change Orders to support product sustaining efforts.

6.Works with clinician’s technical issues and communicates solutions at the appropriate level.

7.Identifies immediate solutions for short term corrections to prevent impact to business goals.

8.Accurately estimate tasks and track/communicate project progress

9.Provide technical guidance to junior level sustaining engineers and/or off-shore engineers

10.Works to integrate product performance activities with new product development to improve project delivery time and reduce post release production issues.


1.Prepares analysis reports for director(s), project leaders or other personnel.

2.Presents project status to management and teams, as required.

3.Develops and tracks work schedule and assignments.

4.Process documentation through document release system.

5.Works on process improvement activities.

6.Provides input to departmental planning and resource activities.

7.Other duties as assigned with or without accommodation.



BSEE or equivalent with Electro/mechanical experience and product life cycles.


5 years of experience working in a multifaceted environment with internal and external customers in a technical support role. Sustaining engineering RoHS programs, product design and project management experience. Experience with wireless communication hardware and corresponding international standards as well as IT networking is a plus.

**Preferred Skills/Qualifications:**

+ Demonstrated experience and a proven track record of success in product support evidenced by lowered support or warranty costs and by a failure rate reduction

+ Experience with internal and outsourced sustaining development projects

+ Proven ability to partner with cross functional organizations to successfully drive the business (relationship building skills is key – influencing – working through people)

+ Solid working knowledge of quality and regulatory requirements

+ Must be a strong communicator, verbal and written, across various levels of the organization as well as cross functionally

+ Must be an extensive multi-tasker, and problem solver with high energy levels and strong organizational abilities. Must be organized and attentive to details.

+ Medical Device and clinical environment experience

+ Working knowledge of automated requirements and test management tools such as Doors, Rational Requisite Pro, Polarion, etc.

+ Working knowledge of networking--TCP/IP communications and understanding of routers and switches

+ Proficiency in installing and setting up desktops PCs, servers and VMs

+ Experience working with offshore/remote development/sustaining teams


Problem solving, priority setting, customer focus and driving for results

Other Skills:Prior knowledge of the FDA Quality System Regulation and/or ISO13485 is a plus

Must communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal
